Ladies who Brunch
Lo-res captures of Bethesda Fountain in Central Park. The Lake lies quietly behind it, a thoroughfare for row boats lazily passing by. Just right across the street from Bethesda Fountain is The Mall and Literary Walk.
When we passed by this Saturday, there was an international peace rally. The rain that hounded much of the morning pit-pattered to a stop; just enough time for my friend and I to make a determined dash for the West Side 72nd St. subway station.
Of course, in central park, a magical place, the rat race simmers down to a slow, ambling pace.
Saturday plans had included brunch at The Boathouse then renting bikes for a self-led park tour. The day dawned at 9:30 for us, groggy inside our heads and cloudy outside. But warm and sunny enough that we convinced ourselves out of carrying an umbrella.
C train dropped us off at 72nd Central Park West.
On the way to the Boathouse we passed by "the" guy arranging flowers around John Lennon's Imagine; sat on benches and admired a Japanese couple tying the knot in a contemporary, Western ceremony (the bride arrived on the requisite horse and carriage escorted by her father, gracefully alighting, wedding dress trailing light ivory behind her); and finally lunch at the Boathouse ($30 meal, excellent mushroom soup, artichoke frittata, and blueberry french toast) taking in the view of lake, trees, and skyscrapers (any excuse to stay out of the blinding rain).
Now, reasonably, biking is delayed for another unseasonably warm autumn weekend.
